Claire Splan, an award-winning writer and editor, is the author of California Month-by-Month Gardening, which received a Silver Award of Achievement in writing from the Garden Writers Association, and California Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, which has sold over 13,000 copies and is now in a second edition.
Claire has written about designing memorial gardens in The Designer, the magazine of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (Spring 2020, “Making Memorial Gardens Memorable.”). Her articles on other gardening topics have appeared in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Age of Awareness, The Startup, and Tenderly. Claire writes about gardening and other topics on Medium.com and she recently began a Substack newsletter called Garden to Table about victory gardening in the 21st century.
Claire began her garden writing career by blogging about her growing interest in gardening and environmental issues at her garden blog “An Alameda Garden” (2006–2016, www.alamedagarden.blogspot.com). She has written for several garden-related websites and done presentations at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, the UC Botanical Garden, the Los Angeles County Arboretum, the Southern California Spring Garden Show, and numerous garden clubs and other venues. She has also been interviewed on radio shows such as “GardenLife,” “Bob Tanem in the Garden,” and “Gardening Today.”
Claire lives and gardens in Alameda, an island in San Francisco Bay.
Claire has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Southern California and a M.A. in writing from the University of San Francisco. She is the Associate Editor of The American Gardener, the magazine of the American Horticultural Society.
